Backache is a nagging ailment that many of us struggle with for various reasons. When they appear in the lumbar spine, they may be a sign of radiculitis, which often manifests itself suddenly. What are the causes of radiculitis and what can we do to alleviate the pain?

Radiculitis and its causes
When we talk about nerve roots, we mean very sensitive nerve fibers that go from the spinal cord between the vertebrae (from the cervical to the lumbar). These are two ventral nerve roots with motor fibers and two dorsal nerve roots with sensory and nerve fibers.
Radiculitis, also referred to as nerve root pain or sciatica, is classified as a nerve root disease. Sudden pressure in the lower part of the spine, very often appearing suddenly, may indicate this ailment.

Symptoms of radiculitis
One of the most recognizable symptoms of radiculitis is very intense, sharp, often paralyzing pain. It can radiate from the lumbar region (lumbago) to the higher parts of the spine and even to the arms or legs (sciatica). In addition to pain, problems with nerve rootlets also manifest themselves:
- contracture of paraspinal muscles,
- tingling and numbness in the muscles,
- loss of strength in the muscles of the arms and legs,
- curvature of the spine,
- general weakness,
- infection causes fever and muscle and joint pain.
Remedies for nerve root pain
In the case of pain in the nerve roots, it is recommended to spend a few days lying down and taking the so-called positioning position. For lower back pain, lie on your back, gently lift your legs, and bend your knees and hips at a 90-degree angle. It is also very important to sleep on a suitable mattress (it should be a bit harder).
Treatment is also based on the intake of painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, as well as muscle relaxants.
In addition, another and effective method of treating radiculitis is to warm the back or the area from which the pain radiates. You can use a hot water bottle, special warming ointments or patches.
In order to avoid inflammation of the nerve roots or to alleviate their course (if the pains do not appear suddenly), it is worth doing special and regular exercises to strengthen the muscles of the spine. These include: cat’s back, lifting the hips and legs, as well as carrying the pelvis in the supine position. Swimming and regular walks will also have a positive effect on our health. nerve roots can also recover as a result of vitamin B1 and calcium deficiency, so remember to take care of your diet. It should include products such as dairy products (cottage cheese, eggs, milk), fish, legumes, kale, meat, yeast and nuts.
